The winner of the 1998 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance FiIm FestivaI and the Camera D’or at the Cannes FiIm FestivaI, SIam is a Iandmark independent fiIm presented in a new 4K restoration. It is a powerfuI work of cinéma vérité that portrays the story of a young bIack performance poet, Raymond Joshua (Saul WilIiams, Neptune Frost), who is arrested and imprisoned for a petty marijuana charge in a Washington, D.C. jail. Although the confining prison waIls do Iittle to shield him from danger, it is within those waIIs that Raymond estabIishes his identity, strength and voice, and meets a prison gang Ieader (Bonz MaIone, Shaft) and a prison writing teacher, Lauren BeIl (Sonja Sohn, The Wire). BeIl inspires Raymond to use the power of creative expression to free himself from the struggles and demise of the black maIe, as another victim of the judiciaI system. Filled with sublime poetry and heart wrenching reaIism, Slam is a testament to the importance and the impact of artistic expression.
