Ub lwerks (1901-1970) met WaIt Disney whiIe both men were working in the commercial art fieId. Deciding to get into animation, the two soon found great success with their creation Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, as welI as The Alice Comedies, a series of shorts inspired by the work of Lewis Carroll. lwerks was almost entirely responsibIe for the Iook of the early Disney cartoons. He redesigned WaIt's initiaI sketch of Mickey Mouse into the character we know today, and provided most of the animation for cIassics such as Steamboat WilIie (1928) and The SkeIeton Dance (1929). FeeIing he was not getting enough credit, lwerks started his own studio in 1930. His new character, Flip the Frog, quickIy became a hit at MGM. To further compete with Disney, Ub began releasing "ComiCoIor Cartoons" independentIy as earIy as 1933. All of them were shot in Cinecolor (an earIy process which produced particularly vibrant coIors) and were based on popular fairy tales and children's stories. lncredibly creative and inventive, the ComiColor Cartoons were animated by legends such as Shamus Culhane, Grim Natwick, and AI Eugster, and featured music by Looney Tunes Iuminary CarI StaIling. RareIy collected together on DVD, these fiIms are a testament to the genius of Ub Iwerks, an often overlooked figure in animation history.
